Momentum Youth Dance Company are representing Yorkshire

Following on from Momentum’s fantastic SELL-OUT 10th Anniversary performance at Wakefield Theatre Royal, the youth dance company are now busy preparing for the National Youth Dance Festival. For the second year running Momentum Youth Dance Company have been selected from hundreds of applications to represent Yorkshire at the highly prestigious event which this year takes place at Sadlers Wells in London. This is a real honour for Momentum Dance and a chance to put dance in Wakefield well and truly on the map!

‘Moves,’ Wakefield’s first ever dance festival hosted by the Wakefield Theatre Royal, got off to an exciting start as Momentum toured the Wakefield district. Momentum’s Dance in Education package ‘Do you want to come and play?’ toured community venues as part of the run up to the ‘Moves’ dance festival. It enabled more than 200 young people from across the district, including Hemsworth, Upton, Castleford, Pontefract and Netherton, to access professional dance performance and participate in street dance workshops.

Sh! Awards 2008

Momentum were invited to perform at the Sh! awards hosted by Brahms in Leeds. The prestigious award ceremony was set up in the memory of Stuart Hocknall, a talented young designer, who tragically lost his life to meningitis. The award ceremony recognises the talents of young design students as well as raising thousands of pounds for charity. Momentum were honoured to have been invited to performat this event and help such a good cause.

Bridlington Arts Festival - Street Theatre performance

Momentum dancers were lucky enough to meet Matthew Bourne and the cast of Nutcracker! at the opening night of the show at Bradford Alhambra. So impressed with the dancers Matthew Bourne personally invited them to take company class with the dancers during their stay in Bradford and to watch rehearsals.

RACA Finale!

Two exhilarating performances at Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield and The Carriageworks, Leeds marked the finale for the RACA (Raising Attainment through Creative Arts) project. Momentum has worked as lead dance artists with RACA over the past five years. RACA finally comes to an end in the Summer after five fantastic years making a massive impact on the lives of hundreds of young people who have been involved.

Partnership - Rambert Dance Company, Momentum and North Yorkshire County Council

Momentum have been commissioned to work in partnership with Rambert Dance Company and North Yorkshire County Council to provide quality arts in education provision to schools in North Yorkshire. Artistic Directors of both companies, Mark Baldwin (Rambert) and Eddie Copp (Momentum) spent the initial launch day planning the year long project.

Asda Corporate Event Performance

Momentum performed alongside pop group Alphabeat at the launch of ASDA’s Big Brunch at ASDA House in Leeds. The 2000 strong audience made up of ASDA managers loved Momentum’s performance as did Alphabeat and Olympic athlete Roger Black who also attended the event.

Following Momentum’s success at last year’s National Youth Dance Festival the Arts Council funded Momentum Youth Dance Company to embark on a regional tour of the company’s diverse repertoire. The company received rave reviews from their performances at Electric Theatre, Barnsley; Cathedral School – Wakefield’s School of the Arts; Huddersfield New College and Garforth Community College.

The regional platform for the National Youth Dance Festival took place at the Lawrence Batley Theatre, Huddersfield. Momentum Youth Dance Company and ten other excellent youth dance groups from across Yorkshire were shortlisted from hundreds of applications to perform at this prestigious event. From the regional platform three groups will be selected to represent Yorkshire at the National Youth Dance Festival taking place at Sadlers Wells in London during July. Fingers crossed!

Momentum were invited to perform at Wakefield Speaks! events that took place across the district. The events hosted by Yorkshire Television presenter Ian Clayton were a chance for Wakefield residents to see the positive developments taking place in their own community and have the opportunity to voice their thoughts about the future of Wakefield. Momentum performed ‘Do you want to come and play?’ and ‘Leyenda’ at the events to represent the development of Arts and Culture in Wakefield.

Momentum has recently commissioned Luke Brown to create a new Hip-Hop piece for the company. Now finish and ready to tour, the new piece named ‘Do you want to play’ premiered on the 22nd October at the Mencey Theatre Paris and brought the house down.

Rugby wasn't the only event Britain were flying the flag for in Paris during October, as Wakefield based dance company Momentum Dance took Paris by storm in a 4 day performance tour of the city. (Wakefield Express 2007) 2

Momentum and its youth dance company Momentum Youth Dance performed a series of street theatre performances at some of Paris' world famous landmarks - the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Mont Martre and many, many more. The company then spent time working alongside a French Dance conservatoire which culminated in a sell-out theatre show.  "The tour was an absolutely wonderful experience for all our dancers. It was simply awesome to perform to huge crowds at some of the worlds most famous landmarks in the city. Working with dancers and choreographers from the Dance Conservatoire was also totally inspirational and culturally so enriching. The whole tour was just a fabulous way of flying the flag for Arts and Culture in Wakefield"

Momentum Dance Productions are currently creating new work to be toured this Autumn

Momentum Dance Productions have started work on a new piece named ‘PULSE’. This new work is a fast paced, dramatic, physical theatre style choreography.
The last pulses of a heart before death evoke highly charged, emotional flashbacks...
Previewed at the Garforth Festival 2nd July 2007 as a work in progress performance. The final work will be toured later this year.

HIP-HOP Sessions hit Wakefield!

Momentum provide the chance for young Wakefield dancers to learn from some of the countries top hip-hop artists over the half-term holiday. Nathan Gearing from Sheffield based ‘Streetvibes’ and Luke Brown from Hampshire’s ‘Parasite Entertainment’ delivered two days of intense Break-dance and Hip-Hop workshops. The workshops culminated in a trip to see the ‘Breakin Convention’ at Shefield City Hall featuring national and international Break-dance companies. Further links and a choreographic commission are already planned with both Streetvibes and Parasite Entertainment - so watch this space!

Global Rock Challenge 2007

Rock Challenge (an international performing arts competition for secondary schools) invited Momentum Youth Dance to perform as entertainment at the West Yorkshire events that took place at St.Georges Hall, Bradford. As always the atmosphere at Rock Challenge was amazing. Momentum would like to say a big well done to all the schools that participated!
